NFL Injury Status Explained
Out
Player has been ruled out and will not play in the upcoming game. Typically announced 1-2 days before kickoff.
Fantasy Impact: Do not start. Find a replacement immediately.
Injured Reserve
Player must miss at least 4 games before being eligible to return. Teams can bring back up to 8 players from IR per season.
Fantasy Impact: Drop or stash on IR spot. Monitor return timeline.
Doubtful
Player has approximately 25% chance or less of playing. Doubtful players rarely suit up on game day.
Fantasy Impact: Bench unless confirmed active 90 minutes before kickoff.
Questionable
Player has roughly 50% chance of playing. Most common designation. Monitor practice reports and pregame warmups.
Fantasy Impact: Have a backup plan. Check inactive list before kickoff.
PUP (Physically Unable to Perform)
Player starts season on PUP list. Must miss first 4 games. Teams have 21-day window to activate after Week 4 or player goes on season-ending IR.
Fantasy Impact: Stash if you have IR spot. Monitor activation timeline closely.
Pro Tip: Practice participation is the best indicator of availability. Full practice Wednesday-Friday = likely to play. DNP (Did Not Practice) all week = likely out.
