Our survivor picks calculator evaluates each available team using five key factors that are weighted dynamically based on your inputs:

1. Base Win Probability (40% Weight)

The foundation of every pick is the team's likelihood of winning this week. We convert American odds to implied win probability using vig-adjusted calculations. A team at -300 translates to approximately 75% win probability, while -200 equates to 67%. This probability forms the base score, but it's far from the only consideration.

The calculator automatically filters out any team below 65% win probability, as these represent unnecessarily risky selections when better options are available. Teams above 80% receive a slight penalty in early weeks (1-6) because burning such heavy favorites typically represents poor future value management.

2. Pool Size Adjustment (25% Weight)

Your pool size dramatically impacts optimal strategy. The calculator applies different weighting schemes based on whether you've selected Small (10-50 entries), Medium (50-200), or Large (200+):

• Small Pools: Prioritize pure win probability. With fewer entries, differentiation matters less. The calculator favors the safest picks available, even if 40% of your pool selects the same team.
• Medium Pools: Balanced approach. The calculator identifies "sweet spot" picks with 70-75% win probability that preserve elite teams while avoiding excessive public concentration.
• Large Pools: Increased weighting toward contrarian value. Teams with 68-72% win probability that are less publicly popular receive score boosts. Successfully differentiating in a 500-person pool is crucial for long-term equity.

3. Week-Based Strategic Value (20% Weight)

The same pick carries different value depending on when you use it. Our survivor grid tool applies week-specific modifiers:

• Weeks 1-6 (Early Season): Heavy penalty for using elite teams (Chiefs, Bills, 49ers, Eagles, Ravens) unless they're facing historically weak opponents. The calculator prioritizes mid-tier favorites that preserve premium options.
• Weeks 7-12 (Mid Season): Balanced scoring. You can deploy one elite team if they have a spectacular matchup (12+ point favorite), but the calculator still rewards saving them for later when possible.
• Weeks 13-18 (Late Season): Future value penalties removed. Pure win probability becomes paramount. The calculator prioritizes your best available teams regardless of future schedule.

4. Team Exclusion Tracking (10% Weight)

The checkbox system allows you to mark teams you've already used in previous weeks. Once excluded, these teams are completely removed from rankings. The calculator then adjusts scores for remaining teams based on scarcity—if you've used 15 of your 32 teams, the remaining quality options receive slight score boosts to reflect their increased relative value.

This feature is critical for mid-season planning. By Week 10, you may have burned several mid-tier favorites and need to carefully allocate your 4-5 remaining elite teams across the final 8 weeks. The calculator helps identify which matchups justify using premium teams versus finding creative value plays.

5. Matchup Context Bonus (5% Weight)

Beyond raw odds, the calculator applies small modifiers for matchup-specific factors:

• Home vs Away: Home favorites receive a +2% score bonus. Home field advantage is worth approximately 2.5 points in the NFL, making home favorites inherently safer than road favorites with similar odds.
• Division Games: Division matchups receive a -3% penalty due to familiarity and upset potential. Even if the Cowboys are 10-point favorites over the Giants, that division rivalry makes it riskier than a 10-point favorite facing a non-division opponent.
• Thursday Night Games: Thursday games (except Thanksgiving) receive a -5% penalty. Short rest creates unpredictability that increases variance even for heavy favorites.

How to Use the Calculator for Maximum Value

To get the most out of this survivor pool calculator, follow this weekly workflow:

1. Monday/Tuesday: Set your week and pool size. Don't calculate yet—odds are still settling and injury news is incomplete. Use this time to review which teams you've already used and check the team exclusion list.
2. Wednesday: First serious calculation. Injury reports are released, and betting lines have incorporated early-week information. Run the calculator to identify your top 3-5 options.
3. Thursday-Friday: Monitor line movement. If your top pick's odds shift significantly (e.g., from -280 to -200 due to injury news), recalculate to see if rankings have changed.
4. Saturday: Final calculation and decision. Lines are stable, weather forecasts are accurate, and all injury designations are known. Make your pick based on the calculator's final rankings.
5. Post-Week: Update your exclusion list immediately after your team plays. If they win, check the box next to their name so they're automatically filtered out in future weeks.

Understanding the Survivor Value Score

The calculator's output shows each team's "Score" which represents their overall survivor pool value from 0-100. Here's how to interpret different score ranges:

Beyond basic usage, experienced survivor pool players use the calculator for advanced planning:

Multi-Week Lookahead Planning

Don't just calculate this week—run calculations for the next 3-4 weeks using different exclusion scenarios. If the calculator shows the Chiefs as your #1 pick in both Week 8 and Week 12, you can strategically choose which week offers better alternative options and save the Chiefs for the other week.

Sensitivity Analysis

Try running the same week with different pool size settings. If a pick ranks #1 in Small but #4 in Large, that tells you it's a heavily public pick. If you suspect your pool's public picks skew toward obvious favorites, you might want to use the Large pool setting even in a Medium pool to identify contrarian value.

Exclusion "What-If" Scenarios

Before finalizing this week's pick, run the calculator with that team excluded to see next week's rankings. If excluding your top pick this week would leave you with terrible options next week, but excluding your #2 pick still leaves quality options, choose the #2 pick now to maintain flexibility.
